NAREDI at Food Ingredients' Making Healthy Claims Conference (Brussel)

On 26-27.05.2010, Food Ingredients' "Making Healthy Claims" conference took place at the Brussels Sheraton hotel.

Sabine Heyman, our Secretary-General, assisted in a panel discussion regarding health claims regulations. Other panellists included: Natasja de Splenter (Senior Associate, Baker & McKenzie) en Sebastian Romero Melchor (Managing Partner, Food Law Consultant).

Encounter between European Commissioner Dalli and European Parliament (Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety) on 4 May

The EU Parliament's Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety has had a meeting with European Commissionner Dalli regarding the Commission's working schedule for 2010.

At this occasion, Commissioner Dalli has emphasized again that the batchwise approval of claims by the European Commission will continue as planned.

Beta-carotene of Dunaliella salina not novel food

On 21.04.2010, NAREDI launched a call-to-action towards its members in order to gather proof of use for Dunaliella salina prior to 15.05.1997. The response was overwhelming, making the project a success: DG 4 has confirmed that based on the submitted evidence, beta-carotene from Dunaliella salina is no longer considered novel food.

The use of the alga itself prior to 15.05.1997, however, has not yet been proven; the alga is still considered novel food. We continue our quest for evidence on this level.

"More time and money for innovation in SME"

That was the position taken by our president Marjan WILLAERT during the Food debate organized by the magazine Brabant Manager on 18 February, 2010.

The central theme of the debate were the trends and challenges all actors in the food sector were facting. The panellists represented all layers of the industry: the AFSCA, manufacturers, consultants, ... presented their view on the industry's hottest topics.
